The early Christians chose the desert for their Monasteries because under Roman rule Egyptian Christians were persecuted. Journey onto Deir al Baramus, this is the oldest of the four surviving Monasteries and the story behind this is of the two sons of Valentinus who were tested to prove their faith.
Upon entry you will find there are domes, staircases and balconies, and apparantley it holds a lock of hair from Mary Magdalene.
